How to Apply DTF Transfers: A Step-by-Step Guide for Beginners

What Are DTF Transfers?

DTF (Direct to Film) printing is one of the fastest-growing methods for decorating garments in the UK. Designs are printed onto a special PET film, coated with hot-melt adhesive powder, and cured — leaving you with a press-ready transfer that can be applied to virtually any fabric.

Whether you're a hobbyist making custom T-shirts or a professional print shop producing bulk orders, knowing how to apply your DTF transfers correctly makes all the difference. This guide walks you through exactly what to do.

What You Need Before You Start

Before pressing your DTF transfer, make sure you have the following:

  • Your DTF transfer sheet from DTF Print Online
  • A heat press machine (not a domestic iron)
  • Your garment — cotton, polyester, nylon, or a blend all work great
  • A heat-resistant protection sheet (optional but recommended)
  • A flat, firm pressing surface

Step-by-Step: How to Apply a DTF Transfer

Step 1 — Pre-press Your Garment

Place your garment onto the heat press and press it for 3–5 seconds with no transfer. This removes moisture and wrinkles, giving you a flat, dry surface for the best adhesion.

Step 2 — Position Your DTF Transfer

Place your DTF transfer print-side down onto the garment, exactly where you want the design to appear. Use heat-resistant tape to hold it in place if needed — especially useful for smaller designs.

Step 3 — Press at the Right Temperature and Time

Set your heat press to 160–170°C and press for 10–15 seconds with firm, even pressure. These settings work for most standard fabrics. For thicker fabrics like hoodies, you may want to go to the upper end of that range.

Step 4 — Peel the Film

Once pressed, lift the press and allow the transfer to cool for a few seconds. DTF transfers can be cold-peeled or warm-peeled — we recommend a warm peel for the best results. Peel slowly and at a low angle.

Step 5 — Re-press (Recommended)

Place a protection sheet or baking paper over the applied design and press again for 5–10 seconds. This final press improves durability and gives the print a smoother finish.

Tips for the Best Results

  • Always pre-press — moisture is the enemy of good adhesion
  • Use even pressure — uneven pressing can cause edges to lift
  • Don't rush the peel — peeling too fast can pull up parts of the design
  • Store your transfers flat in a cool, dry place until you're ready to use them
  • Avoid washing for 24 hours after pressing to let the adhesive fully cure

What Fabrics Work Best?

DTF transfers bond well to cotton, polyester, nylon, silk, leather, and most blended fabrics. Unlike screen printing or HTV vinyl, there are virtually no fabric limitations — making DTF one of the most versatile decoration methods available.
