How to Apply DTF Transfers: A Step-by-Step Guide

What You Need Before You Start

Applying DTF transfers is simple and gives professional results every time. Before you begin, make sure you have the following:

  • Your DTF transfer from DTF Print Online
  • A heat press machine (or a domestic iron for home use)
  • The garment or fabric you want to press onto
  • A silicone sheet or parchment paper

Step 1: Preheat Your Garment

Before applying your DTF transfer, place your garment flat on the heat press and press for 3–5 seconds. This removes any moisture and wrinkles, giving you a smooth surface for the best possible print result.

Step 2: Position Your DTF Transfer

Place your DTF transfer print-side down onto the garment in the desired position. Make sure it is straight and centred. Use heat-resistant tape to hold it in place if needed.

Step 3: Apply Heat and Pressure

Set your heat press to 145°C (cotton) or 135°C (polyester). Press firmly for 7–10 seconds with medium-to-firm pressure. If you are using a domestic iron, apply firm pressure in circular motions for around 15–20 seconds, making sure to cover the entire transfer evenly.

Step 4: Hot Peel

Our DTF transfers from DTF Print Online are hot peel. This means you should peel the carrier film away immediately while it is still warm. Peel slowly from one corner at a 180° angle. If the ink lifts with the film, press for a few more seconds and try again.

Step 5: Final Press

Once the film is removed, place parchment paper or a silicone sheet over the transfer and press again for 5 seconds. This locks the ink into the fabric fibres and gives it a matte, professional finish.

Tips for Best Results

  • Cotton fabrics give the most vibrant results with DTF transfers
  • Wash garments inside out on a cool cycle to maximise transfer longevity
  • Avoid tumble drying at high heat
  • Do not use steam when pressing — moisture is the enemy of a good press
  • For best results, use a professional heat press rather than a domestic iron
